On a clear day, driving up Highway 168 toward Shaver Lake
there are a few opportunities to see the Sierra Nevada Mountains. There is a
dedicated “Vista” at the top of the four lanes and there are two turnouts
below that. There is also an opportunity to get off the highway and park near
the Buckeye Helipad where things are less busy and more casual. I would guess the mountains to be about 40 miles away. I took some
shots with my Sony A7R2, Fe 70-300mm lens, adapted 400mm Canon lens and Zeiss Batis
85mm lens. One can also look west and see across the great central valley to
the coastal mountains over 100 miles away. You can also see the devastation of the pines caused by the combination of the draught and pine bark beetle.
