George Lake

Hike Route

Well, I hiked to Twin Lakes again and added on George Lake.

I posted the Twin Lakes hike on June 22nd. https://midsierramusing.blogspot.com/2022/06/twin-lakes-hike-2022.html

George Lake is another mile beyond Upper Twin Lake and another climb of about 1,000’. So, in round numbers George Lake is 10 miles round trip and 2,000 of gain from the trailhead at Badger Flat on the Kaiser Pass Road. I was out for 7 hours total.

I got an early start at 5:30am and beat the two road construction crews that had flagmen and pilot cars. The morning was cooler (it was actually 31degrees Fahrenheit as I drove over Tamarack Creek).

I did not see any game this time either. This early, both Lower and Upper Twin Lakes were flat and reflective. The mosquitoes must have had a fresh hatch because they were abundant. Being the Friday of July 4th weekend, there were plenty of campers at Upper Twin Lake.

I think George Lake is the prettiest of the three lakes and sits below Kaiser Peak which is only partly visible. There are nice established campsites by the lake. I was back at the trail head in the same amount of time it took me to get to George Lake. The climb back up to Potter Pass inbound is demoralizing on tired old legs. As you return from George Lake to Upper Twin Lake, pay attention to the Sierra Nevada mountains on your right that you probably didn’t notice outbound.

I again used my Sony A1 camera, 85mm 1.8 lens and 16-35mm lens.

  1. Dale, was a pleasure to meet you a few months ago on the bald eagle tour. I was the young man with the Canon R6 and the RF 800mm F11 on that rainy morning. I am continuing to follow your adventures with great interest. My wife and I did Mist Falls in Kings Canyon about a 2 weeks ago and then had the opportunity to go to Zion and hike the Narrows and do Grand Canyon during this last week. Always a blessing to be out. In any case, thank you for the continued posts, God bless!

    1. Hi Brendan, Did you see the bald eagle fledge? That is from the new eagle's nest on the Madera side of the lake that was there when we were on the boat together I believe. Did you see any bears on the Bubbs Creek or Mist Falls trail? I heard there is a mother with cubs in the area. God bless to you and your wife. Made several trips to that nest with Dean G. and my Son.

    2. I have not been back to the lake recently I'm afraid. My father actually had an old ski boat and normally we would spend a lot of time out there but he is in the process of trying to sell it and I have not been up there otherwise. Fortunately I have your updates on the eagles to keep me going! We did see 2 bears (or 1 bear twice possibly), one on the way there one on the way back. Just a single bear by itself. I believe it was similar spots so quite possibly the same one. Thanks again!
